Going Green... The New Normal

Today’s policy debate on energy independence and climate change is as historically significant as the debate surrounding air and water quality issues in the 1970s and 80s.

And we’re doing our part to change.

The real estate industry is playing a constructive role in addressing today’s energy and global warming challenges. Developing buildings that use energy, water and other finite resources efficiently has essentially become the new normal in real estate markets for Class A commercial construction, be it office, industrial, multifamily residential, retail or lodging/hospitality properties.

What’s more, existing buildings that wish to maintain their value and marketability are increasingly being renovated or retrofitted to improve their energy demand management systems and sustainability, including through greater use of cleaner and renewable sources of energy.

RealSustainable, an initiative of The Real Estate Roundtable, reflects the real estate industry’s commitment to continue the progress to help assure America’s long-term environmental sustainability and economic prosperity.

Our interest and concern cuts across new and existing building stock. We support strategies that:

  • Promote sustainable practices
  • Use energy more efficiently
  • Employ cleaner sources of energy

Moreover, we are committed to:

  • Educating real estate owners, developers, managers, tenants, occupants, lenders and investors about these strategies
  • Working with policymakers to ensure new and existing public policies advance these strategies to ensure continued progress
